Maxwell ton gives Aussies the edge over England in T20 Tri-Series

Maxwell ton gives Aussies the edge over England in T20 Tri-Series”

After being contentiously omitted from Australia's team for the one-day worldwide series which England won 4-1, Maxwell re-emphasized his allround value in the shortest format with his second consecutive match-winning performance.

But he scored just four on debut as Australia cantered to a seven-wicket win against New Zealand at the SCG on Saturday.

After captain David Warner won the toss and elected to field, the Aussies dismissed unsafe opener Jason Roy in just the second over before a few solid partnerships consolidated the innings for England. England were able to include all of Alex Hales, Roy and Chris Jordan after injury concerns although Liam Plunkett remained sidelined.

England captain Eoin Morgan believes contested catches are an unavoidable part of the landscape after watching Glenn Maxwell cash in on a debatable decision to power Australia to victory in Hobart.

England lost their opening Trans-Tasman T20 series match against Australia by five wickets, as Glenn Maxwell put in an all-action performance to take two for 10 and then strike his second global Twenty20 hundred, from 58 balls.

While David Malan, England's unsung hero at the 2017 Ashes, notched up a 36-ball fifty, Alex Hales and captain Eoin Morgan contributed 22 runs apiece.

An economical Agar finished with 2-15 from three overs including a remarkable caught and bowled off his first ball. Maxwell caught Jos Buttler for just five off Marcus Stoinis before Agar took his second caught and bowled wicket as Sam Billings departed for ten.

Morgan said: "It's two dropped catches officially and my opinion doesn't matter".

However, England were able to wrestle back the advantage as early as the first over of Australia's response.

Speaking after the match, Maxwell said he wasn't chasing triple figures. "I would say yes but I don't know how, I don't have an answer", he said.

Willey, who was promoted to open the innings in Canberra but drops back down to the middle order for the Hobart clash, hit five straight sixes in taking 34 runs off Test spinner Nathan Lyon's first over.

Maxwell looked to have holed out in the 13th over, with Jason Roy scooping up a low catch in the deep off leg spinner Adil Rashid.

Yet D'Arcy Short and Maxwell were quick to respond as 15 runs in the sixth over took them to 59-2, just a run behind England at that stage in their innings.

The Australian number four wanted to hit over cover to finish things, but he failed to beat the field off a short ball from Mark Wood, before hoisting the next ball over the rope. Catch Live scores and updates of the 2nd T20I between Australia and England.
