Patrick Surtain Jr. picks Alabama on national signing day

Patrick Surtain Jr. picks Alabama on national signing day”

He became Alabama's first official signee of the day. The first of three previously committed prospects flipped when four-star defensive lineman Bobby Brown elected to stay home and sign at Texas A&M.

The five-star prospect out of Plantation, Florida, was down to Alabama and LSU, but seemingly had the Tigers in the lead for quite some time.

Both prospects are also ranked within the top-five of the class rankings and could help boost Alabama's class into the top three of the class rankings.

Saban and his staff was more focused on filling needs instead of the overall strength of the class.

"I think they get Surtain", Michael Scarborough of Rivals.com/TigerBait.com said Wednesday. Wednesday's seventh-place finish also ended the a seven-year run at No. 1, dating back to a No. 4 overall ranking in 2010.

The defending college football national champions picked up the highest-ranked remaining uncommitted recruit in the country on National Signing Day.

"I think we'll probably have a quarterback join us some kind of way", Saban said, "which I don't think I can comment about".

Defensive back was the key position of need.

"We're really excited about the players that we were able to attract in this recruiting class", Saban said in his National Signing Day news conference. Surtain is also a fan of LSU secondary coach Corey Raymond, a former LSU cornerback and safety who has handled most of Surtain's recruitment. "So I don't think we struck out anywhere".

Smith officially signed with Alabama.

You can't build a more ideal prospect from the cornerback position. So does that mean we struck out?

"I think they get Chase and Joseph in addition to Surtain", Scarborough said. "We redshirted a kicker from last year's class - who really counts in this year's class - so we couldn't really take a full class this year from a numbers standpoint".

The commitment gives Alabama two five-star commitments with Surtain Jr. joining defensive end Eyabi Anoma.

In fact, the Tide's 18-member signing class ranked behind several program it has competed against in recent years, including sixth-place Clemson, No. 5 Penn State, No. 4 Southern Cal, No. 3 Texas and runner-up Ohio State. The Slidell, Louisiana native chose Alabama over Tennessee and Mississippi State.

Without Surtain and Goodrich, LSU will sign no cornerbacks and no quarterbacks - with LSU quarterback target James Foster of Montgomery, Alabama, expected to pick Florida State - and just two three-star running backs.
