4400 year-old tomb of top pharaoh official discovered in Egypt

4400 year-old tomb of top pharaoh official discovered in Egypt”

The tomb, which dates to about 2,400 B.C., was unearthed during excavations near the Great Pyramid of Giza, not far from Cairo, the BBC reported.

The tomb is thought to have belonged to "Hetpet", a high-ranking female official, Egypt's Antiquities Ministry announced.

The "Hetpet" tomb features "very distinguished" and well-preserved wall paintings depicting "Hetpet" standing in hunting and fishing scenes, or receiving offerings from her children.

The tomb was discovered during an excavation mission in the Giza western cemetery region, which has been known to house the burial sites of former royal palace officials. The tomb was discovered in October 2017 and that's when they started to dig deep to get as much information and history as possible.

The cemetery was previously excavated by several archaeological missions since 1843.

He said: 'This is a very promising area.

Egypt has announced a series of ancient discoveries in the past few months. We expect to find more. "We have removed between 250-300 cubic metres of layers of earth to find the tomb".

'What we see above the earth's surface in Egypt doesn't exceed 40 percent of what the core holds'.

The Egyptian Administrative agency of Antiquities revealed the findings on Saturday.

Waziri said her main tomb is believed to be in the same area as the new discovery.

In January, Egypt placed the ancient statue of one of its most famous pharaohs, Ramses II in the museum.

The tomb "has the architectural style and the decorative elements of the Fifth Dynasty, with an entrance leading to an "L" shaped shrine", the ministry said.

Egypt hopes the inauguration of the new museum, along with the recent discoveries, will draw visitors back to the country.

The government has tightened security around archaeological and touristic sites and spent millions of dollars to upgrade airport security especially following the 2015 downing of a Russian airliner over the restive Sinai Peninsula by the Islamic State group, killing 224 people on board.
