Malema wants secret ballot for no-confidence motion against Zuma

Malema wants secret ballot for no-confidence motion against Zuma”

South African President Jacob Zuma should step down, a senior ruling African National Congress official said, raising fresh pressure on Zuma who has been weakened since Cyril Ramaphosa became ANC leader in December.

Mashatile's remarks come amid increasing calls for Zuma to resign ahead of Thursday's State of the Nation Address (Sona).

The ANC's National Executive Committee mandated the top six to discuss with Zuma what the party is calling a "leadership transition".

Investors associate Zuma's tenure with a period of economic decline, with growth slowing to an average of 1.5 percent a year and unemployment up to 28 percent from around 23 percent when he took office in 2009.

Mr Zuma has survived several no-confidence votes during his rule thanks to loyal voting by ANC lawmakers, who form a strong parliamentary majority. "The ANC top six have held them at president Zuma's guesthouse".

Opposition parties have been calling on the ANC to remove the 75-year-old president, whose time in office has been marred by several allegations of corruption. Zuma has denied any wrongdoing.

"President Jacob Zuma, who is set to deliver the SONA, unfortunately embodies none of this", the letter said.

According to the local IOL news website, party chairman Gwede Mantashe told worshippers at a church east of Johannesburg that they were meeting Zuma to consider options regarding his future as president of the country.

Zuma agreed to establish the inquiry into "state capture", a South African term for government corruption, last month.

Those privy to the discussion said they expected the meeting to be a hard one as Zuma has made it clear to his inner circle that he would not be resigning any time soon and he was even prepared to risk being ousted through a parliamentary impeachment process or a motion of no confidence, which would see him forfeiting retirement benefits such as, among others, a salary for life.

In the letter‚ Malema rejects Mbete's decision to hold the motion of no confidence against Zuma on February 22.
