Russian pilot killed after Syrian rebels shoot down plane

Russian pilot killed after Syrian rebels shoot down plane”

The Idlib Media Center, an anti-government activist group, posted images that purportedly show the plane's wreckage.

Russian Federation said an airstrike left more than 30 militants dead in an area of Syria's Idlib province after one of its warplanes was brought down on Saturday and its pilot killed, according to reports.

The Russian defence ministry said the pilot had ejected but was killed in a ground fight.

The jihadist group Tahrir al-Sham released a statement on social media, quoting a commander in charge of its air defences as saying that one of its fighters had hit the jet with a shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missile during an air raid over Saraqeb. One of the men can be heard shouting "He is Russian". Since then, Syrian troops have captured wide parts of the country and in recent weeks have been making advances in Idlib.

Russian Federation has been conducting military operations in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since September 2015.

On November 19, the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group was flushed out of its last stronghold in Syria's Al-Bukamal.

The head of the observatory, Rami Abdurrahman, said the plane could be Russian.

"There have been dozens of Russian airstrikes in the area over the past 24 hours", according to Rahman.

The army also carried out a successful operation in the south of the province of Aleppo, where, after heavy clashes with terrorists of al-Nusra Front, the villages of al-Mulaham and Atshanah Sharqiyah were liberated.

In August 2016, five Russian soldiers were killed after their helicopter was shot down by rebel groups in Idlib.

Mattis did not say why he deemed the Sochi peace effort a failure, but stressed the UN-backed process in Geneva, brokered by United Nations special envoy de Mistura, was "on track again for all the people who've questioned we'd ever get there".

A copy of the final statement did not mention the fate of Moscow's ally President Bashar al-Assad.
