Second woman 'arrested' in Tehran for hijab protest

Second woman 'arrested' in Tehran for hijab protest”

The Islamic dress code, established in the 1979 revolution, considers the Islamic veil or hijab, mandatory for any woman over age of 13 in Iran and says that they must cover themselves from head to foot while they reject any dress that embraces the figure.

As The Star reports, some women in Iran have begun taking off their hijabs in public and waving them on a stick in protest of their unequal treatment by the nation's religiously conservative government, a move that could result in arrest, detainment or even imprisonment.

The woman from the iconic protest image that activists have been imitating was reportedly freed on Monday after spending about a month in jail.

Videos and photos shared widely on Facebook and Twitter showed Hosseini following the Girl of Revolution Street's lead, removing her scarf and standing on an electric box for ten minutes, before plainclothes policemen stepped in and took her away. The woman was identified as Vida Movahed, a 31-year-old woman.

The young woman's resistance act coincided with the wave of protests that spread across the country in late December 2017.

Movahed's identity was initially a mystery until Iran's most prominent human rights lawyer, Nasrin Sotoudeh, established she had been arrested.

She was detained for several weeks before being released from custody. Her message is clear, girls and women are fed up with forced [hijab].

On Monday, reacting to the new protest, Sotoudeh wrote: "Today, I was informed that a second woman has stood on a telecoms box in the same place, holding up her hijab aloft on a stick". Both Rouhani and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei support softer attitude toward women with improper hijab, though hard-liners opposed to easing such rules still dominate Iran's security forces and judiciary.

Iranian law has compelled women to wear a hijab since the 1979 revolution, but it has been a hard policy to enforce.

Pictures posted on social media on Monday showed at least three other women standing on top of telecoms boxes in Tehran in apparent solidarity with the women, including one near Ferdowsi Square. Despite the fear of reprisals, millions of women in Iran defy the restrictions on a daily basis.
