Russian Federation says Su-27 fighter jet intercepted USA spy airplane; United States protests”

A new video shared by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet to their YouTube channel shows a Russian Su-27 flying closely past a U.S. EP-3 Aries aircraft on Monday.

In November, a Russian Su-30 fighter flew as close as 50 feet before turning on its afterburners while intercepting a US Navy P-8A Poseidon anti-submarine warfare aircraft over the same area, and in December, two US Air Force F-22s were intercepted by Russian Su-25 and Su-35 jets.

In a statement, the State Department said: "This is but the latest example of Russian military activities disregarding global norms and agreements", calling on Russia "to cease these unsafe actions".

"The Russian fighter's maneuvers on January 29 were standard and absolutely legal and safe for the USA surveillance plane", the ministry said.

"The Aerospace Force will continue to maintain the reliable protection of Russian airspace, the ministry said in a statement carried by the state-run Tass Russian News Agency".

According to the U.S. Navy: "The Russian Su-27 executed a hard right-to-left turn from the U.S. EP-3's right side with an excessive closure rate and came within five feet of the EP-3's right wingtip". That said and given the risks involved, the question remains did is Russian Federation violating worldwide laws? "Unsafe actions increase the risk of miscalculation and midair collisions".

Specifically addressing 67th Task Force of the 6th Fleet Commandant Bill Ellis, the Russian Defense Ministry offered a reminder that "Crimea is an integral part of Russia" and that USA forces had to consult with Russian, not Ukrainian personnel, before conducting such missions near the Black Sea peninsula, whose population was mostly ethnic Russian.

The US Navy has been conducting reconnaissance missions over the Black Sea at a high rate since the annexation of Crimea by Russian Federation in 2014.

"The smallest lapse of focus or error in airmanship by the intercepting aircrew can have disastrous consequences, Ellis said".

"The Russian fighter's maneuvers on January 29 were standard and absolutely legal and safe for the USA surveillance plane EP-3E", the Russian Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

"The actions of the Russian Su-27 that was blocking the attempts of the EP-3 Aries II reconnaissance plane to approach the border of the Russian Federation near the Crimea for more than 2 hours and 20 minutes are correctly called 'escort, ' " the statement said.
