Apple faces a probe from United States authorities over older iPhone performance throttling”

After it was discovered Apple is purposely slowing down older iPhone's due to poor battery performance, the company has found itself in the middle of a controversy that doesn't seem like it will go away anytime soon.

The U.S. Government is looking into whether Apple violated security laws in its recent disclosure about a software update for iPhones that slowed down some of its older devices.

Apple told Bloomberg that it has indeed "received questions from some government agencies", and that it is "responding to them". But it resulted in disappointing performance for users.

Authorities in France are in the midst of an investigation whether Apple violated laws protecting consumers in that country and lawyers in the US are pursuing a variety of class-action lawsuits on behalf of millions of consumers.

We sought to further enhance the customer experience in December by announcing a significant reduction on replacement batteries for specific iPhones. Users first discovered that Apple was doing something to deliberately slow down older phones when their clunky iPhone started performing better, or like new, when they put in a new battery. Do you think Apple should have just come clean from the get-go?

The investigation stems from an iOS software update Apple released in January 2017 that addressed an issue where iPhones with batteries that no longer hold enough of a charge shut down during processor intensive tasks.

The probe comes after reports past year revealed Apple was deliberately slowing older iPhone models through software updates. Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love. The throttling affects iPhone 7 and older models, but not the newer iPhone 8 and iPhone X flagships, the company has confirmed. Apple also discounted the price on a battery replacement to $29, a $50 savings. That includes the iPhone X, Apple's most expensive handset yet.

The land could see Wistron expanding its assembly operations to also cater to clients other than Apple, industry officials said.

This wasn't handled right by Apple and now Cook is attempting to pass the buck by basically saying that it was their lazy ignorant customers who didn't pay attention to the details of an update.
