Google welcomes HTC talent, eyes future hardware

Google welcomes HTC talent, eyes future hardware”

Back in September of a year ago, it was confirmed that Google was paying $1.1 billion to HTC for the teams that worked on the Pixel, which would bring those individuals over to Google's ranks.

Google has finalized its deal with HTC, bringing the Taiwanese manufacturer's core design team across to the Mountain View company.

The HTC engineers will remain in Taipei, turning Taiwan into Google's most significant engineering hub in the Asia-Pacific region. However the reports suggest that these 2000 engineers will help Google manufacturing three or four Pixel smartphones and will continue manufacturing its own smartphones which eventually compete with the Pixel smartphones.

If Google's push into smartphones sounds familiar, that's because the latest deal echoes Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility in 2012.

"This agreement is a brilliant next step in our longstanding partnership, enabling Google to supercharge their hardware business while ensuring continued innovation within our HTC smartphone and VIVE virtual reality businesses", said Cher Wang, Chairwoman and CEO of HTC. According to a source aware of the development, the company has worked with a subdivision of its new HTC employees on a contract basis for the Pixel and Pixel 2 and now it will have a bigger R&D in-house team.

Google's Pixel sales have been a fraction of Apple's, but another phone maker designing more of its own components is a bad sign for suppliers.

Google's billion-dollar deal to acquire a part of HTC (along with a non-exclusive license for its intellectual property) is done. It's likely that development on the Pixel 3 was started a fair while back, but the countdown is now on for the third generation of Google hardware and we here at Ausdroid can't wait.

Google earlier on Tuesday also announced that it would be partnering with enterprise mobility management company MobileIron to create a white-label cloud services marketplace. While Apple iPhone processors come from TSMC and others, most of the Google's Android devices come powered by Qualcomm.
