White House Press Briefing Following McCabe's 'REMOVAL' from Federal Bureau of Investigation”

FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who has been a target of unrelenting criticism from President Trump, abruptly announced his resignation Monday, according to a senior government official who was not authorized to comment publicly on personnel matters.

During a dinner at the White House on January 27, 2017, Trump asked for a pledge of "loyalty" from James Comey, then the F.B.I. director, who was overseeing the investigation of the Trump campaign.

A person close to the matter confirmed that McCabe will still formally retire in March, but is leaving the deputy director position now, and plans to use leave time to fill out his remaining time at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

McCabe already had meant to retire this spring, but his presence at the bureau had increasingly become a focal point of anger for Trump, who continues to fume about the special counsel investigation into his campaign's dealings with Russian Federation.

Trump targeted McCabe with critical tweets after it emerged that his wife had received a campaign contribution for a race in Virginia in 2015 from an ally of Trump rival Hillary Clinton.

McCabe joined the bureau in the mid-1990s.

McCabe's exit follows WaPo's report by one week.

Trump took to Twitter several times to criticize McCabe.

"How can FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, the man in charge, along with leakin' James Comey, of the Phony Hillary Clinton investigation (including her 33,000 illegally deleted emails) be given $700,000 for wife's campaign by Clinton Puppets during investigation?" Trump also reportedly berated McCabe over the political donations his wife received from McAuliffe. Members of the Florida Congressional Delegation have been among the staunchest Trump White House defenders, and the first to respond was Pensacola Rep. Matt Gaetz.

After McCabe volunteered that assessment, Priebus says he asked McCabe whether he would be able to make a similar statement to the public. Days later, CNN reported that Priebus pressured McCabe to refute the Times report.

McCabe was at the center of another major development in the Russian Federation investigation. The tweet was part of Trump's efforts, discussed with White House aides, to discredit F.B.I. officials.

Flynn has since pleaded guilty to lying during that interview.
