MSU to be focus of state investigation after Nassar scandal”

ESPN aired a special edition of E:60 on Sunday morning with details from Outside The Lines reporting on how Michigan State University handled the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal and the alleged rape culture at the school, which included allegations involving the football and men's basketball programs.

"Whatever protocol or policy was in place, whatever frontline staff might normally be involved in response or investigation, it all got kind of swept away and it was handled more by administration [and] athletic department officials", said a former university sexual assault counselor, Lauren Allswede, who left Michigan State in 2015 over frustration that the school didn't handle such cases properly.

The investigation will be led by retired Kent County prosecutor William Forsyth, assisted by the Michigan State Police director, Col. Kriste Etue, who said she will help determine whether crimes were committed. Assistant Attorney General Christina Grossi is project manager. “This investigation will be independent, thorough, transparent and prompt.”.

Though he gave no specific dates, Schuette said his department plans to find out who knew what and when, who took action, who failed to take action, what did or did not happen and what should have happened.

Also on Friday, Michigan State University athletic director Mark Hollis announced that he was retiring. On Wednesday, January 24, MSU President Lou Anna Simon announced that she would be leaving her position. He will be assisted by Michigan State Police in the probe into events leading to the conviction and sentencing of Dr. Larry Nassar, the former doctor at MSU and national medical coordinator for USA Gymnastics who molested more than 100 gymnasts.

Board Chairman Brian Breslin also read a statement in which the board apologized to Nassar's victims and said the institution hasn't been focused enough on them. "I've often said that there is one system of justice and the rules apply to everybody, the same way".

An explosive report in The Athletic claims that NCAA president Mark Emmert was informed in 2010 of at least 35 cases of sexual assault committed by Michigan State athletes, but did nothing.

The MSU Board of Trustees asked Schuette to investigate the events surrounding the wide-ranging sexual abuse case of the former doctor. Forsyth said Saturday, referring to Nassar. Forsyth said he's never seen anything of this scope in his 42 years of work as a prosecutor. Beekman will serve in an interim role until the board of trustees can hire an interim president and then a permanent leader.

Sixteen players have been accused of sexual assault or violence against women under football coach Mark Dantonio's watch since 2007, according to interviews and public records obtained by ESPN, despite the football coach addressing four football players in June as the first offenders he dealt with on any such issues.

Gov. Rick Snyder is considering a separate inquiry into the university, depending on whether it would interfere with other investigations. The victims include some of the most famous Olympic gymnasts in American history, including gold medalist Aly Raisman, as well as athletes at Michigan State University and at USA Gymnastics.
