Janelle Monáe gives stirring Time's Up speech at Grammys

"Praying" was the lead single off Kesha 's third album "Rainbow", a lush work with mournful piano and strings, and lyrical explorations about her struggles with self-image.

Her song about empathy in the face of pain is the emotional highlight of tonight's awards. Rainbow was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album, and "Praying" was up for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Kesha's poignant performance at the Grammys brought a defiant message of hope and healing for victims of sexual assault.

"Praying" served as a moment of victory for Kesha, who has been involved in a years-long legal battle against her producer Dr. Luke, who she accused of drugging and raping her, as well as physically, verbally, and emotionally abusing her.

"Praying", released to much fanfare last year, is the singer's first solo single in almost four years. He has denied the allegations. It was her first since 2012's Warrior.

In another sign of support for #MeToo movement, attendees including pop superstar Lady Gaga wore white roses in solidarity with survivors of abuse and in a call for gender equality.

Despite the rousing reception, Kesha was passed over for the awards.

"When i wrote praying, with ben abraham and ryan lewis, i just felt as if i had gotten a huge weight off of my shoulders", she wrote on Saturday, January 27. We've heard powerful stories throughout the Me Too and Time's Up movements, but Kesha's performance tonight will stand out in a way that very few others do.

Monáe, 32, was introducing a powerful performance by Kesha, Cyndi Lauper, Bebe Rexha, Camilla Cabello and The Resistance Revival Chorus, which was formed for the Women's March a year ago as "a collective of more than 60 women who come together to sing protest songs in the spirit of collective joy and resistance".
