Trump taunts Schumer for taking 'such a beating' on government shutdown fight”

On Thursday, Trump proposed legislation that would provide a path to citizenship for as many as 1.8 million young undocumented immigrants in exchange slashing legal immigration, his beloved wall, and a crackdown on other undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.

To appeal to Republicans, the plan would slash family sponsorship of immigrants, tighten border security and provide billions of dollars in funding for a border wall with Mexico, one of Trump's signature campaign promises - and proposals that have largely failed to gain traction with Democrats before.

Officials said they expected McConnell to bring the president's plan to the Senate floor for a vote during the week of February 5, just days before the February 8 expiration of a short-term government spending plan.

Mr Trump said he believed some Republicans lawmakers who have taken tough stances on immigration would agree to offer citizenship within 10 to 12 years to young immigrants brought to the country illegally. The diversity visa lottery would also be abolished, though the visas would be reallocated so that the backlog of people already waiting for family visas and high-skilled immigration green cards would be processed. The president added that he wants $25 billion to secure America's borders. However, the plan would not allow immigrants' parents to seek lawful status, the officials said.

The plan represents a sharp shift in U.S. immigration policies.

And even as Trump was offering reassuring words to the Dreamers - "tell them not to worry", he told reporters Wednesday evening - senior White House officials were emphasizing the more hard-line features of their forthcoming immigration proposal.

She said if the immigration proposal is passed, it would be the only resource DACA receivers would have enabling them to become Americans the right way.

Mr Trump ended the Daca programme, whose protections did not include a path to citizenship, last September.

Republican Senator Jeff Flake said Trump's words on citizenship reflected a bipartisan proposal by Graham and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin that Trump recently criticized as "very very weak" in an interview with Reuters.

The White House plan is a clever ploy to use the Dreamers as leverage to advance a nativist agenda.

Speaking on The New York Times podcast "The Daily", Schumer said he told the president ahead of a major meeting on immigration: "If you're going to have Stephen Miller there or somebody like that, it's not going to work". "I said, 'We'll take it, '" Schumer added.

Cruz did not mention Trump by name, but there is no doubt that he was voicing the concern shared by numerous men and women who supported Trump in the last presidential election.

- Eliminating the visa lottery for countries with low rates of immigration to this country.

Rep. McCaul introduced a bill that allows DACA recipients to receive renewable legal status, but ensures those with serious criminal convictions are not eligible for legal status.

If Warren and Democrats are willing to reject a generous amnesty offer because they balk at funding the wall and ending chain migration, they better prepare to face backlash from their own party's pro-amnesty wing.
