Moon madness! Rare moon show is next week

Moon madness! Rare moon show is next week”

January 31 will close out the magic moon month with a lunar eclipse during the second full moon of the month (which is also a supermoon). The lunar calendar nearly lines up with our monthly calendar, but not exactly.

The next super blue blood moon won't happen again until January 31, 2048.

Finally, a supermoon occurs when the full moon is at the closest point of its orbit to the Earth, which is also called the perigee.

"These studies will help us tell the story of how impacts large and small are changing the surface of the Moon over geological time", Petro said.

Black Moon The black sheep of the moon family, a black moon may not be that much to look at, since it's the second new moon within a month - and since we can't see new moons, well we'll just have to appreciate that it's there.

The 2019 eclipse, unfortunately, will not be a "blue moon" which only come around every 2.7 years.

The January 31 supermoon, which is the first blue moon of 2018, marks the last in a trilogy of supermoons.

The last time a lunar eclipse coincided with a blue moon at its perigee in North America was in 1866, when Andrew Johnson was US president and Jesse James started robbing banks and trains. "While the Moon is in the Earth's shadow it will take on a reddish tint, known as a 'blood moon'".

A guide to the total lunar eclipse. That is when the earth's shadow will start to cover the moon. The gas molecules of Earth's atmosphere scatter bluer wavelengths of light from the sun, while redder wavelengths pass straight through.

There are long traditions of giving different moons names. This is truly a rarity given that double blue moons will occur 4 - 5 years in a century.

To see the phenomenon, you need to be on the night side of the Earth; this eclipse will be visible mostly in Asia, Australia, the Pacific and North America.

When it comes to known astronomical events in 2018, this is the top highlight. The finishing parts of the eclipse take place after the moon sets.

Partial eclipse ends at 7:11 a.m.
