Tide Pod Challenge: YouTube Will Remove 'Dangerous' Videos

Tide Pod Challenge: YouTube Will Remove 'Dangerous' Videos”

What are hungry Tide Pod fanatics to do, now that everyone from YouTube and the US government to Rob Gronkowski has jumped their case about the dangers of purposefully ingesting laundry detergent?

Palate cleanser: Sean Berthiaume, co-owner of Vinnie's Pizzeria in Williamsburg, is serving "Pied pods" - mini-calzones that look like Tide pods - for a limited time at his Bedford Avenue eatery.

The Poison Control Center in Kansas City is seeing more calls about teenagers intentionally ingesting the harmful detergents.

"YouTube's Community Guidelines prohibit content that's meant to encourage unsafe activities that have an inherent risk of physical harm", said a Google spokesperson. "We work to quickly remove flagged videos that violate our policies", a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement.

The company hired National Football League star Rob Gronkowski to film a clip that will call on teenagers to stop eating Tide Pods.

"The "laundry packet challenge" is neither amusing nor without serious health implications", said Stephen Kaminski, JD, AAPCC's CEO and Executive Director.

The new social media craze has attracted so many takers that YouTube has chose to pull down videos of people performing the challenge.

According to USA TODAY, the pod-eating trend has connections back to 2015 when satirical site The Onion posted a story written from a child's point of view, about wanting to eat a Tide laundry pod. The videos have become an online craze among teenagers, prompting widespread health and safety warnings.

A media-savvy Brooklyn pizzeria owner is putting his own twist on the viral Tide Pods challenge by selling "Pied Pods" - nuggets of dough, cheese and pepperoni shaped like detergent capsules. "DOING LAUNDRY. Nothing else".

What should Tide PODs be used for?

The video is going viral right now.

That's because there are severe health risks related to eating laundry detergent.

In 2017, USA poison control centers received reports of more than 10,500 children younger than 5 who were exposed to the capsules.
