"I think I deserve to smile out there after that victory", said Sharapova. Sevastova was able to get the break back off a double-fault from the Russian.

Maria Sharapova was happy with her improved display after an impressive win over Anastasija Sevastova at the Australian Open. But not this time.

Sevastova would get the first mini-break of the tiebreak after a forehand victor down the line but then lost her two points on serve to give Sharapova the upper hand.

"You know, it's another tough match here", said Kerber.

Top-ranked Simona Halep had to save set points at 5-2 down in the first set, and badly twisted her left ankle early in the second, before beating teenage wild-card entry Destanee Aiava 7-6 (5), 6-1.

"I think I have learned that from a very young age, and I have come to understand it and appreciate it".

Sharapova will next face Germany's 2016 Australian Open victor Angelique Kerber, who celebrated her 30th birthday by overcoming Croatia's Donna Vekic 6-4 6-1.

Eighth seed Garcia also stayed in the title hunt, but she found it hard going against Czech teen Marketa Vondrousova who pushed her to three gruelling sets.

The win was a relief for Djokovic, who says he's still not 100 percent after six months off the tour with an injured right elbow and who lost in a second-round shocker here past year.

"She has paid her dues", he said. "But we know it's like this in Australia - the next day it can be freezing".

And was no longer being in her twenties a problem? "I want to be playing against opponents that have former Grand Slam champions", Sharapova said of a potential match against former No. 1-ranked Kerber.

Among men through to the third round was Spain's 21st seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who swept past American Tim Smyczek in straight sets.

On the men's side, Sam Querrey was ousted after losing, 6-4, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-2, to the 80th-ranked Marton Fucsovics.

Defending champion Federer beat Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in a night match, his first on Rod Laver Arena since clinching a career-reviving title here past year.

Defending champion Federer has made at least the third round each year since his debut at Melbourne Park in 2000.

Six-time Australian Open champion Djokovic beat American Young to reach the second round for a 12th consecutive year.

Sevastova, the 14th seed at the tournament, was supposed to be a bigger test for Sharapova.

In other matches, fourth seed Alexander Zverev plays fellow German Peter Gojowczyk and 2014 Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka continues his comeback from a lengthy injury lay off against Tennys Sandgren.

She returned to the tour midway through 2017 and entered the first grand slam tournament of the year unseeded and with a world ranking of 48.
