Camila Cabello Opens Up About Fifth Harmony's Controversial VMA Performanceā€¯

ABC/Heidi GutmanWhile Camila Cabello has avoided talking in depth about her departure from Fifth Harmony in 2016, she agreed to discuss the topic in a new interview with the New York Times.

Fifth Harmony has continued as a quartet and released their self-titled third album a year ago.

The former Fifth Harmony singer, 20, released the track back in August (17), and it has since gone double platinum in the USA, climbing to number two on this week's (begs08Jan18) Billboard Hot 100.

The four remaining women of 5H kicked off their VMA performance appearing in silhouette with one extra member, before one of them was pulled off the stage, hinting at a not-so-civil exit from Cabello after the jumped ship and left the group.

"It definitely hurt my feelings", she says. I was just like, 'What?

"I just love that attitude, there's a vibrance here that makes me feel good".

And the "Rocket Man" star is in luck, as the "Crying in the Club" singer previously admitted that after originally thinking the album would be full of "sad songs", she has now found it to be more upbeat than she expected. After her request to write lyrics for Fifth Harmony was denied, Cabello, who said she wanted to pursue a solo career while still in the group, realized something had to change (via Spin).

"It became clear that it was not possible to do solo stuff and be in the group at the same time", she added. So she made her choice, basing it on what she said was her conviction that "if anyone wants to explore their individuality, it's not right for people to tell you no". The last song by a solo female artist in a lead role to reach that particular milestone was Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" in 2013. Then the more I got into the year, it just was better. "And obviously, Blake Lively is a queen. But I just wasn't expecting for them to be there and I just got kind of weird, I was like, 'Why are you so weird, stop being weird'". I love your voice.

Camila, the pop singer's full-length debut album, dropped at midnight.
