Google Inc (GOOG) looks to have acquired United Kingdom startup Redux”

Google quietly acquired a United Kingdom -based company which turns the surface of devices such as smartphones into speakers with its technology.

It remains unclear when Alphabet bought the sound specialist, but the tech-giant confirmed that it obtained the shares on December 13. Google declined to comment on the price and details of the deal. Being able to do away with, or at least shrink, that physical component could be another significant advantage to smartphones with Redux technology onboard. However, it is believed the deal went through in August. The same controlled vibrations could also be used to deliver haptic feedback through the display. Apple recently adopted an advanced Taptic Engine in its iPhones and other devices that offers enhanced feedback, and Google may be planning to use Redux tech in a similar fashion. The startup is developing technology, and it will be able to turn certain surfaces into speakers. Google has made no mention of the acquisition as of yet.

If Google decides to use Redux's display-speaker technology on its future Pixel phones, the company could achieve a better bezel-less design without removing front-facing speakers. It could also improve waterproofing for future phones since it eliminates the need for speaker holes. If Google doesn't put Redux's technology in a smartphone, it's certainly possible that the company could put it on one of its very own Smart Displays. At the CES consumer electronics conference in Las Vegas this week, Google is heavily promoting its voice-controlled speakers that compete with Inc.'s Echo device. Panel Audio could allow Google to cram a lot more hardware into its phones, which could give it more room to boost the on-device artificial intelligence services it has been pushing over the previous year.
