'Google memo' author files discrimination lawsuit”

Ex-Google engineer, David Gudeman, is also listed as a plaintiff in the suit.

James Damore's class action lawsuit claiming that Google unfairly discriminates against white men with unpopular political views is surprising, considering the overwhelming evidence of systemic sexism and underrepresentation of women and minorities in the tech industry, a Toronto lawyer says.

"Google employees who expressed views deviating from the majority view at Google on political subjects raised in the workplace and relevant to Google's employment policies and its business, such as "diversity" hiring policies, 'bias sensitivity, ' or 'social justice, ' were/are singled out, mistreated, and systematically punished and terminated from Google, in violation of their legal rights", the complaint, filed on Damore's behalf by attorney Harmeet Dhillon of the Dhillon Law Group, says.

Not only was the numerical presence of women celebrated at Google exclusively due to their gender, but the presence of Caucasians and males was mocked with "boos" during company-wide weekly meetings.

According to the suit, Google "employs illegal hiring quotas to fill its desired percentages of women and favored minority candidates" and "openly shames managers of business units who fail to meet their quotas-in the process, openly denigrating male and Caucasian employees as less favored than others".

Google did not immediately reply to a Law&Crime request for comment.

James Damore, the author of the controversial "Google Memo" that went viral in August, has filed a class-action lawsuit against Google. Travis Kalanick lost his job as Uber Technologies Inc.'s chief executive officer in June amid scandals over sexual harassment, discrimination and an aggressive culture.

Engineer James Damore's memo, which was leaked this fall, criticized Google's "left leaning" culture and attempted to argue that women in engineering were paid less than men due to their biological differences, not because of hiring practices. Pichai said that "portions of the memo violate our Code of Conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace".

Echoing Damore's initial blog post, the suit also accuses Google of "producing an ideological echo chamber" and "a protected, distorted bubble of groupthink" where political correctness was elevated over merit.

After the controversy swelled, Danielle Brown, Google's then-new vice president for diversity, integrity and governance, sent a statement to staff condemning Damore's views and reaffirmed the company's stance on diversity.
