Major New York airports shut down during storm

Major New York airports shut down during storm”

Passenger train operator Amtrak was running reduced service in the Northeast, while mass-transit systems in major metropolitan areas, including NY and Boston, remained open.

More than 40 flights have been cancelled at the Ottawa airport, as a major winter storm bears down on the East Coast. Blizzard warnings and states of emergency were in wide effect, and wind gusts hit more than 70 miles per hour in some places.

Travelers flying with top airlines in the USA like American, Delta, Southwest and United are being advised to call the airport before leaving for the facilities due to likely delays and cancellations.

The airports remain open, though it is unclear when flights will resume, according to a 11:30 a.m. alert released by the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, which oversees the area airports.

The director of the airport, Tony Caruso, says he is hopeful about flights for tomorrow.

Numerous canceled flights were to the northeastern part of the country, such as Boston, Newark and NY, according to the airport's website.

With a snowstorm battering the East Coast, some passengers trying to make their way cross-country from Los Angeles International Airport were met Thursday with flight delays and cancellations. As the storm began to wind down, the airport was continuing its focus on snow removal efforts.

"Bombogenesis is the technical term".

"We had a broken-down plane, we had awful weather", traveler Bernard Mostert said.

"I have a big meeting today, so I had to go in".

Some 45,000 homes and businesses in the Northeast were without power early on Thursday, though that number was expected to rise as the storm intensifies across the region.

The bombogenesis phenomenon occurs when a storm's barometric pressure drops 24 millibars in 24 hours.

This storm looks like it will intensify at twice that rate, said Bob Oravec, lead forecaster at the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center. "It is snow plus very high gusts of wind, and that changes the situation very dramatically".
