Briton Laura Plummer jailed in Egypt for drug smuggling

Briton Laura Plummer jailed in Egypt for drug smuggling”

Tramadol is a controlled substance in Egypt, where trafficking the drug can lead to up to 25 years in prison or even the death penalty in rare cases.

Shop worker Laura Plummer, 33, was arrested after she was found to be carrying 290 tramadol tablets in her suitcase, a painkiller which is legal in the United Kingdom but which is banned in Egypt.

Plummer claimed the painkiller, which is legal in the United Kingdom but banned in Egypt, was to treat her Egyptian partner's back pain.

The family have also denied reports in the media that Caboo has abandoned Plummer for any other wife and/or girlfriend, saying he is "heartbroken" and has stood by her side since day one.

Plummer has been detained in Egypt since her arrest in October, though her legal team is now debating whether to appeal the decision.

Tuesday's verdict, which came as a surprise in what was meant to be a session devoted to defense arguments, can be appealed.

According to a Facebook group set up by her family, she appeared in court in Egypt on Boxing Day and was jailed for three years, the Press Association reported.

"We're just hoping. Even half of that would be better".

The Plummer family has previously said Plummer had no idea that what she doing was illegal and was just "daft". I'm even more anxious now she's in actual prison with real criminals. Tramadol is illegal in Egypt and it is widely used as a recreational drug, supplanting heroin and cannabis. "Anything less than three years".

The trial was held this morning with a new interpreter and she was jailed by a judge for three years and fined around £4,200.

She said he daughter has been "living in hell" sharing a jail cell with no beds with up to 25 other women, adding her daughter now looks "unrecognisable".

The family's local MP Karl Turner said: "I think it's a damning indictment about good sense and fair play". "She has demanded the presence of an official translator or to get permission to use the translator she already has", he said. "She doesn't deserve that".

She said the family were trying to find out more details about what happened in the courtroom yesterday. She's out there by herself.
