Tunisia suspends Emirates Airlines flights

Tunisia suspends Emirates Airlines flights”

Emirates said it would stop operating its Dubai-Tunis connection following instructions from the North African country.

The build up to the suspended flights followed anger in Tunisia over repeated reports of Tunisian women being banned from boarding Emirate flights from Tunis to Dubai.

The UAE minister of state for foreign affairs, Anwar Gargash, said on Twitter both countries had been in contact about the "security measure information", without elaborating. The rights group called it a "racist and discriminatory" measure.

Officials in Tunis have barred the carrier from touching down in the capital due after the airline stopped the country's women from flying to or transiting through the UAE at the weekend.

The Ministry of Transport said the measure would stay in place until Emirates was able to operate flights in accordance with the law and global agreements.

Zeabi reportedly said the measure was "temporary and relating to security arrangements".

"Here in the UAE, we are proud of our experience in empowering women, we appreciate Tunisian women, respect them and value their pioneering experience, and we see them as the protectors of safety".

The Tunisian government said on Friday it had asked the UAE ambassador for clarification, adding the envoy said the decision was for only a short period and the restrictions had been lifted.

More than 8000 Tunisians are suspected to have fought with ISIL, hundreds of women among them.

As per a news agency AFP, the delay for some of the Tunisian women has been because they had visa issues and their visa had to undergo extra examination.
