Palestinian teens arrested for assaulting IDF troops, hoping for response on film

Palestinian teens arrested for assaulting IDF troops, hoping for response on film”

Israeli soldiers forced their way into the Nariman and Bassem Tamimi's home before dawn on Tuesday, the way they have done dozens of times before - only this time instead of leaving with Nariman or Bassem, they arrested the couple's 16-year-old daughter, Ahed Tamimi.

Israeli officials threatened to retaliate against a teenage girl and her family after a video spread across social media of her slapping an Israeli soldier.

The arrest happened early Tuesday morning, around 3am, when the army raided Tamimi's house, arresting her and seizing telephones, computers and electronic equipment, her father has said.

In 2015, a picture of Ahed as a child biting the hand of a soldier to try to stop the arrest of her cousin Mohammed became a symbolic image. Soldiers had raided the Tamimi family home and shot Mohammed from the yard of their house.

When Ahd was a child, a video was posted in November 2012 by photographer Samer Nazal of Ahd going after Israeli soldiers who arrested her brother during confrontations in the village, demanding that he be returned and released.

The Tamimis say they choose to cultivate strength, not fear within their children - even if that means teenagers get pulled out of bed and taken away to unknown locations in the middle of the night by fully armed soldiers. "Their goal would be to circulate this footage spreading lies about the IDF, but these soldiers knew what they were trying to achieve and did not budge", they wrote.

Ahed has been praised by activists and the worldwide community for her courage during protests in Nabi Saleh, which have been held every Friday in the village for years.

"But because we resist, we pay the price". The girl, identified by Hebrew media as 17-year-old Ahed Tamimi, and two other girls were caught on camera Friday slapping and harassing the soldiers in an apparent attempt to provoke a violent response.

Al-Tamimi, a former prisoner, was detained when he was 13 years old, and was previously injured several times during weekly clashes in his village.

"The last three days have seen the arrest of two children and severe injuries to another".

"His situation is very bad", she said.

The Palestinian NGO Badil told Al Jazeera that it was common for Palestinians to sleep with their clothes on in order to "avoid further invasion of privacy and embarrassment" during the raids.

This is "part and parcel of wider Israeli policies that must exist for [Israel] to continue foreign domination and the colonisation of Palestine", Badil said.
