Trump Administration Prohibits CDC From Using Words 'Evidence-Based,' 'Diversity, 'Fetus,' More

Trump Administration Prohibits CDC From Using Words 'Evidence-Based,' 'Diversity, 'Fetus,' More”

In a turn of events that is just begging to be described as Orwellian (or perhaps Carlin-ian), the Centers for Disease Control has told employees to refrain from using a list of seven words in upcoming budget proposals, according to a Washington Post report.

The analyst who provided this info to the Post also explained that they had been given some alternate phrases for some of the words.

CDC policy analysts were reportedly told of the banned words at a meeting on Thursday. "Our subject matter experts will not lay down quietly - this hasn't trickled down to them yet". Several key departments - including Health and Human Services, which oversees CDC, as well as Justice, Education and Housing and Urban Development - have changed some federal policies and how they collect government information about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.

"The assertion that HHS has "banned words" is a complete mischaracterization of discussions regarding the budget formulation process", HHS spokesman Matt Lloyd said Saturday.

You can not fight against the Zika virus, or improve women's and fetal health, if you are unable to use the word "fetus.' You must be able to talk about science and evidence if you are to research cures for infectious diseases such as Ebola".

The Trump administration has been repeatedly scrutinized for declining to acknowledge science-based findings, particularly related to climate change.

And the CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention refers on its website to the importance of its mission of "addressing the health needs of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender".

Calling the order "reckless" and "unimaginably unsafe", Dana Singiser, vice president of public policy and government affairs for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, also weighed in. Whereas Carlin's "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television" are the obscenities everyone knows and loves, the seven words the CDC reportedly can't use are: "vulnerable", "entitlement", "diversity", "transgender", "fetus", "evidence-based", and "science based".

"Here's a word that's still allowed", added Rush Holt, chief executive officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

In response to ABC News' request for comment from the CDC, an HHS spokesperson responded in a statement.
