Skies partially clear for Geminid meteor shower

Skies partially clear for Geminid meteor shower”

The Geminid shower is different from other meteor showers because it is active throughout the night.

The Virtual Telescope Project said: "The Geminid meteors are ready to offer us an fantastic shower, the best of this year, while their parent body, the potentially hazardous asteroid (3200) Phaethon, reaches its minimum distance from the Earth".

The annual Geminid meteor shower peaks tonight.

According to Boyle, the rising of the crescent moon at 3:45am will not interfere with this year's display.

A stunning light show put on by the Geminid meteors illuminated the crystal-clear night sky over the Changbai Mountains in northeast China on Wednesday.

They will come from the east, appearing to originate from the Gemini constellation twins Castor and Pollux.

Geminids are created by tiny fragments that break off the asteroid 3200 Phaethon.

The dust pieces, no bigger than a grain of sand, burn up as they smash into the Earth's atmosphere, up to 100 miles about the surface at speeds of up to 100,000mph. They also have shown rates as high as 120 meteors per hour.

You may have already seen some shooting stars across the sky the past few nights.

The shower will start at approximately 10 pm on 13 December when the Gemini constellation will be noticeable in the north-eastern sky. There will be some straggling meteors on the evening of December 14, but the shower is expected to peak on the evening of December 13, between midnight and 4a.m. The moon rises at 2:36 a.m. Thursday, so you will have slightly better viewing before that.

The flawless time to view this shower will be between 7:30 PM on December 13th until the early morning of December 14th.

To increase chances of catching sight of as many meteors as possible, Wibisono advises getting away from the city lights and into an open area with no tall trees or buildings obscuring the horizon.

Allow your eyes about 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness and then just keep your eyes peeled for any meteors streaking through the skies.
