Mikheil Saakashvili, Ex-President of Georgia, Arrested in Ukraine, Again”

"I assured the President that the IMF stands ready to continue to support Ukraine, along with other worldwide partners, in the fight against corruption and encouraged the authorities to accelerate the implementation of reforms", she said.

After he was freed, he urged the crowd to impeach Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko, a former ally.

Ukrainian authorities this week have faced accusations of deliberately sabotaging anti-corruption reforms, which are a key condition for worldwide support for the country as it grapples with a Russian-backed separatist insurgency.

Nika Melia, Chairman of UNM's Political Council, who addressed the rally first, told the protesters that the party and its leader were engaged in "a struggle for better future, for freedom and for maintaining independence".

"Ukraine needs to ensure the independence of the NABU in such a way that politicians can not influence the NABU's work".

"Corrupt Empire Strikes Back" read the headline of the English language newspaper Kyiv Post on Friday.

"Urgent. They have detained Mikheil Saakashvili", it said.

He hasn't been formally charged, but prosecutors say he colluded with Ukrainian businessmen tied to Russian Federation to topple President Petro Poroshenko.

"The situation with Saakashvili is not worthy of global attention, because there are specific crimes that were committed and we must ensure transparency of the investigation and absolute openness", Poroshenko said.

Dozens of Ukrainian police in riot gear raided a protest camp outside parliament on Wednesday in a failed attempt to detain former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili, who was freed from custody by supporters a day earlier, Reuters reported. Saakashvili denies the allegations against him.
