House Ethics Committee Investigating Two GOP Members; One Resigns”

US Representative Trent Franks said yesterday that he would resign from Congress effective immediately, instead of the January 31 date he previously had set following the announcement of a probe into accusations of sexual harassment against him.

Ethics is unlikely to proceed in light of the resignation.

"Given the nature of numerous allegations and reports across America in recent weeks, I want to first make one thing completely clear".

The head of a prominent conservative group was present last week when a woman who has accused Rep. Trent Franks of asking her to be a surrogate for his child in exchange for $5 million detailed her allegations to House Speaker Paul Ryan's staff.

On Thursday, Democratic Senator Al Franken announced on the Senate floor that he too would resign his Minnesota seat amid harassment claims.

Franks' departure comes just days after Democratic Representative John Conyers of MI announced his immediate retirement amid sexual harassment allegations that he has denied. He faced accusations from women of improper sexual behavior that he's contesting. He sought to clarify the comment, saying later-term abortions linked to pregnancies caused by rape are infrequent.

Franks is a strong backer of President Donald Trump and has embraced some of his stances on social issues.

Franks represents a district encompassing suburbs north and west of Phoenix. But no revelations were aired in the aftermath of the decision, and Franks went on to assume the chairmanship of a House Judiciary subcommittee.

Before winning election to Congress, he served in the Arizona Legislature and founded the Arizona Family Research Institute, an organization associated with Dr. James Dobson's "Focus on the Family". The behaviour occurred when the staffer worked for Franks. The speaker's office declined to comment.

Ryan says he presented the allegations to Franks, which he did not deny, and told Franks he would refer the allegations to the House Ethics Committee.
