Mueller's alleged Deutsche Bank subpoena very unsafe for Trump: Judge Napolitano

Mueller's alleged Deutsche Bank subpoena very unsafe for Trump: Judge Napolitano”

The White House has said reports asserting special counsel Robert Mueller subpoenaed financial records connected to the President "are completely false".

"Trump's Deutsche Bank records said to be subpoenaed by Mueller", read the headline to the original Bloomberg story published Tuesday.

Mr Mueller is investigating alleged Russian attempts to influence the election, and potential collusion by Trump aides.

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer John Dowd disputed that account, saying he had been told by Deutsche Bank that no such subpoena had been issued.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also said the reports were false. Specific requests of the bank were not immediately clear, but the USA media previously reported that Deutsche Bank lent the Trump Organization more than US$300 million for real estate transactions before Trump became president. "We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources", Sekulow said in a statement.

It's not clear who Mueller is targeting or whether other members of Trump's campaign team under scrutiny by the special counsel may also have had business connections to Deutsche Bank.

Trump's biggest lender, followed the orders of a subpoena to turn over all documents relating to ties with the Trump family, according to the report. But the Deutsche Bank subpoena may indicate that the special prosecutor is still looking at a wide range of data, including the president's financial dealings.

Well, now they reportedly did (and executives at Deutsche Bank had previously said they expected this).

Mr Trump had liabilities of at least $US130 million ($171 million) to Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas, a unit of the German bank, according to a federal financial disclosure form released in June by the US Office of Government Ethics. We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources.

In a July 9 interview with the New York Times, Trump said Mueller should not extend his investigation into Trump's finances if they were not directly related to the Russian Federation accusations.

The $300 million includes a $170 million loan Trump took out to complete a hotel in Washington, two mortgages against his Trump National Doral Miami resort, and a loan against his tower in Chicago. The only conclusion that we can arrive at with any certitude is that Trump is kidding himself if he thinks this investigation will conclude by the end of the year. In fact, Trump went on, because of the bank's role in creating this "once-in-a-century credit tsunami", Deutsche Bank owed him money, to the tune of $3 billion in damages.

Internal Deutsche Bank documents seen by Reuters feature the names of Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his wife, Kathleen, in a series of client profiles.
