Arctic blast on the way for Leeds and across Yorkshire this weekend

Arctic blast on the way for Leeds and across Yorkshire this weekend”

A strong cold front moving through central and southern MS will bring an end to the warm days we have had recently.

The NWS is calling for a high temperature of about 50 degrees, with winds from the north at about 7 miles per hour, shifting to the southeast this afternoon.

Unfortunately, we won't be completely done with the rain Tuesday as lingering showers return Wednesday thanks to the passage of another upper level disturbance which will make for a rather raw feel with otherwise cloudy and cold weather with highs only in the 50s.

Latest models from Weather Outlook show the first snow is expected to fall over the Scottish Highlands from around midday on Thursday. Low temperatures will reach the teens and 20s with wind chill temperatures in the single digits. Locally heavy rain is possible but it will end quickly with cooler, drier air filtering in on Tuesday afternoon.

"By Thursday morning the rain starts to clear and opens the door for some really cold weather, especially across the northern half of the UK".

For most areas, snow will not accompany the cold. "There could be some opportunities for snow showers or flurries". Tonight, we'll remain on the warm side with lows in the 60s with only a slight chance of showers, mainly after midnight.

The coldest temperature last week was -6C (42.8F) in Pershore, Worcestershire, on Thursday. A clipper system in the northwest flow will lead the next surge of cold air and this could squeeze out some light precipitation Friday night.

The coldest night of 2017 so far was January 30 when Braemar, Aberdeenshire, fell as low as -10.1C (13.8F).

Friday will continue with very cold temperatures.

As mentioned earlier, if rain falls for long enough, evaporative cooling can gradually lower the temperature, resulting in it turning to snow. Temperatures will drop to 40° overnight.
