The National capital is the most unsafe among 19 major cities in the country, accounting for almost 40 per cent of rapes reported, 33 per cent of crimes against women and the highest crime rate in 2016, according to data released by the NCRB on Thursday. This number is a 12 per cent decrease from 2015 when a total of 66,676 cases were registered. After Madhya Pradesh, it is Uttar Pradesh which is on second position in rape cases.

While 9.5% of all Indian Penal Code crimes were reported from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Kerala recorded crime rates substantially higher than the national average of 233 per lakh population.

Under POCSO, Uttar Pradesh again topped the list with 4,954 cases, while Maharashtra had 4,815 cases and Madhya Pradesh registered 4,717 cases.

As per the NCRB, UP was the state where the maximum number of crimes took place a year ago, while Delhi reported the highest crime rate. Delhi also reported the most number of cases of economic offences at 5,942 cases or 19.3 per cent followed by Jaipur at 4,742 cases and Mumbai at 4,191 cases. As for murder, Delhi registered 479 out of a total of 2,194 cases or 21.8 per cent followed by Bengaluru at 229 cases or 10.4 per cent and Patna at 195 cases or 8.9 per cent.

Maharashtra reported the highest number of missing persons (94,919 - 17.2%) out of the total of 5,49,008 persons (2,34,334 males and 3,14,674 females).

This year, a total of 8,132 cases of human trafficking were reported in the country with West Bengal reporting the highest number of cases (3,579) sharing almost 44% of the total cases followed by Rajasthan (1,422) sharing 17.9% of such cases in the country. "Comparatively, Karnataka reported 1,869 such incidents, accounting for just 4.3 per cent of all such crimes in the country", the Indian Express report said.

Delhi reported 33 percent (13,803 cases of the total 41,761 cases in 19 cities with a population above two million) of total crimes against women and was followed by Mumbai at 12.3 percent (5,128 cases).

Delhi also reported the highest number of kidnappings and abductions - 5,453 cases (48.3 percent) followed by Mumbai with 1,876 cases (16.6 percent) and Bengaluru 879 cases (7.8 percent) during 2016.

Other crimes in which the state has alarming figures are assault with intent to disrobe (highest in country), human trafficking (third highest) and robbery (highest). There is an increase in crimes including rapes, kidnapping/abductions, offences against children, atrocities against Dalits and tribals, senior citizens and the number of juveniles involved in crimes.
