Democrats could come up losers in government shutdown fight”

Trump tweeted on Tuesday morning that he doesn't "see a deal" happening with "Chuck and Nancy" due to their stances on immigration and taxes.

Other Republican holdouts include Trump critics Sens.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, pulled out of the White House meeting because of a tweet that Trump sent earlier in the day attacking them as weak on illegal immigration and bent on raising taxes.

How this exacerbates the potential for shutdown: The tweet seemed entirely directed at Trump's base. "So they're not showing up for the meeting".

In a joint statement, Senate Democratic leader Charles Schumer and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said they didn't see a point in the scheduled meeting in view of Trump's tweet.

A December 8 deadline is looming for passing a spending measure needed to prevent a shutdown.

With few other levers of power, Democrats are under pressure from their core voters to extract as many concessions as they can. To avoid shutting down, Congress will need to agree on a wide-ranging budget deal. You want to negotiate with us?

US President Donald Trump pledged to "take care" of North Korea after its latest ballistic missile launch -the first after a two-month hiatus - which his Pentagon chief said was its highest yet, signifying an expanded threat.

How this increases the risk for a shutdown: It officially cuts Democrats out of the negotiating process.

"Kim Jong-Un declared with pride that now we have finally realised the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force, the cause of building a rocket power", she said.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders called the Democrats' decision "disappointing". The president's invitation to Democrats "still stands, and he encourages them to put aside their pettiness, stop the political grandstanding, show up and get to work. These issues are far too serious for these kinds of games". Now in control of all three levers, Republicans would suffer even more from a shutdown, Democrats said.

"I hope they are wise enough to learn from our mistakes", he said.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) on November 28 said President Trump "doesn't indicate he is serious". Mr. Trump struck a fiscal deal with Mr. Schumer and Ms. Pelosi in September, taking Republicans by surprise.

Next, it was Senate Democratic leadership's turn to get in front of the cameras and spin their side.

Pelosi and Schumer added they "don't have any time to waste" in addressing the issues on their agenda and would work with Republicans who are "interested in reaching bipartisan agreement". We're going to learn very soon.

"If the president, who already said earlier this year that 'our country needs a good shutdown, ' isn't interested in addressing the hard year end agenda, we'll work with those Republicans who are, as we did in April", the top Democrats said.
