Microsoft Will Demolish Its Campus to Build a Mini

Microsoft Will Demolish Its Campus to Build a Mini”

"Neighboring a vibrant urban core, suburban towns, lakes, mountains, and miles of forest, it's one of Microsoft's crown jewels".

The massive redesign will begin next year and encompasses 18 new buildings, $150 million in transportation infrastructure improvements, and almost 7 million square feet of renovations to existing workspace, Microsoft said. Today Microsoft has 125 buildings on our Redmond campus. "When this project is complete, our main campus will be comprised of 131 buildings - including the equivalent of 180 [American] football fields of new and renovated space".

Microsoft's future Redmond headquarters will look and operate more like small city, featuring a two-acre open plaza that can host 12,000 people.

After decades in which high-tech workplaces were defined by bland, low-slung office buildings, the largest tech companies have seized on the idea that their campus designs can be assets in terms of attracting talent in a highly competitive marketplace, as well as making a strong visual statement about the company's brand, culture and values.

Microsoft plans upgrade for Redmond headquarters

As our employees create the tools and services of the future workspace for our customers, it's important they have a campus that reflects that future for themselves.

The new campus will introduce 2.5 million square feet of new office space, allowing the company to add 8 thousand employees to its workforce of 47,000 employees in Redmond. However, with the new buildings, the company plans to take a different approach.

Microsoft's modern campus overhaul isn't as futuristic as the Apple Park, but the company says it's a major step forward for its culture, substantially expanding its headquarters with modern workplaces and creating 2,500 construction and development jobs in the area. It will all connect seamlessly with the Redmond Technology Transit Station, which will ferry passengers by light rail to downtown Bellevue and Seattle.

Redmond has been Microsoft's home since 1986, and we are proud to be an active part of the Puget Sound community. As a Zero Waste Certified campus we will continue to focus further on waste-reduction initiatives. That would enable Microsoft to raise the headcount at Redmond to a staggering 55,000 employees. The 18 new buildings part of the overhaul will be Energy-Smart Buildings that utilize Azure to monitor the building system and energy usage optimization, according to the company.
