Massage Envy Therapists Accused Of Sexual Assault By Over 180 Women”

In the midst of sexual assault allegations embroiling the nation from Hollywood to Capitol Hill, more than 180 women have just come forward with allegations of being sexually assaulted at Massage Envy spas, according to a report published by BuzzFeed News this week.

In order to prevent sexual assault allegations, Massage Envy also requires franchises to buy insurance that protects them and the national company against at least three claims by clients per year.

BuzzFeed, however, says lawyers for the victims maintain many more people have settled claims outside the courts with no paper trail.

Massage Envy does not compel franchisees to notify police of sexual assault complaints except where such reports are required by local laws.

"Even one incident is too many", the statement said. "I felt broken.", Ingram said in an interview that aired Monday on The Today Show.

According to an ABC News report, one woman is suing after she said she was assaulted in 2015 at a Massage Envy in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Two women reported sexual assault incidents at a Sacramento franchise, the only Northern California location cited in the investigation. She opted instead to phone the police, and Deiter admitted to assaulting Ingram during questioning.

There are 32 Massage Envy locations in MA. "Others have quietly fired therapists without reporting their offenses to police or state regulatory boards, allowing the therapists to move on to new professional opportunities with a clean record". Numerous accusers have now sued the chain, and subsequent court records reportedly show that multiple women had complained to Massage Envy about Deiter's actions prior to Ingram's report.

In the paperwork on the Department of Labor and License, it states that a woman received a massage at Massage Envy in 2009 from David Wilson.

"Massage Envy told BuzzFeed News that it would not be "appropriate to respond point-by-point" to questions "because of pending litigation" and the confidential documents involved. It's why we are constantly listening, learning and looking at how we can do more, including how we support franchised locations with best practices in handling these incidents and supporting their clients".

But overall, Melanie Hansen, general counsel of Massage Envy Franchising, said the company has worked hard to create the industry's "most stringent, rigorous policies" for hiring, screening, and training therapists.
