U.S. calls on Pakistan to arrest recently freed Islamist leader Hafiz Saeed

U.S. calls on Pakistan to arrest recently freed Islamist leader Hafiz Saeed”

"The United States is deeply concerned that Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) leader Hafiz Seed has been released from house arrest in Pakistan", State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement on Friday.

The US and the United Nations classify Saeed's JuD as a terrorist group and it is alleged to be a front organization for LeT, whose attack on Mumbai led to the death of 166 Indians and foreigners. Saeed is suspected of masterminding coordinated terrorist attacks in Mumbai that killed at least 166 people in 2008.

The United States has expressed deep concern at the release of 2008 Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed, on Friday (November 25) calling for him to be arrested and charged for his crimes.

Earlier in the day, the LeT Chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed was released from house arrest, two days after the Lahore High Court (LHC) rejected the Punjab government's request to extend his detention.

In a strongly worded statement, the White House said Saeed's release, after Pakistan's failure to prosecute or charge him, sends a "deeply troubling message" about Pakistan's commitment to combating global terrorism and "belies Pakistani claims" that it will not provide sanctuary for terrorists on its soil.

"The Pakistani government now has an opportunity to demonstrate its seriousness in confronting all forms of terrorism, without distinction, by arresting and charging Hafiz Saeed for his crimes", Sanders said.

Lashkar-i-Taiba and its leaders remain subject to U.S. sanctions and the government has offered a US$10 million reward for information that brings him to justice.

The US treasury department had designated Saeed as a specially-designated global terrorist under executive order 13224 in 2008. We've given them billions and billions of dollars, and what did we get? They say that while Jamaat-ud-Dawa may indeed perform charitable activities, it is also a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Pakistan militant group which became notorious for strikes on Indian targets, including a 2001 attack on its parliament in Delhi.

"I was detained for 10 months only to stop my voice for Kashmir", Saeed told supporters who gathered outside his residence to celebrate his release.

Pakistan denies that. While Saeed was under house arrest, his JuD charity launched a political party, the Milli Muslim League (MML), which has won thousands of votes in by-elections. Sharif is ousted from the prime minister house because he committed treason with Kashmiris. The assault brought nuclear-armed neighbours Pakistan and India to the brink of war.

The campaign appeared to produce some success this year when Pakistani security forces assisted with the release of a Taliban-held US-Canadian family after five years in captivity.
