Indonesia's Mount Agung Erupts For Second Time In A Week Grounding Flights

Indonesia's Mount Agung Erupts For Second Time In A Week Grounding Flights”

The centre has not felt it necessary to raise the overall alert level, which remains at 3 on a scale of 1 to 4, nor to more strictly limit human activity around the volcano.

According to the Associated Press, the latest eruption on Mount Agung occurred around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported. More eruptions followed and continued into Sunday, with a "medium-pressure eruption" in the early evening that sent ash 2,000 meters into the air, the agency said.

Made Sugiri, an employee at Mahagiri Panoramic Resort some 10 kilometres from the crater, said a thin layer of volcanic ash reached the area.

Indonesia's Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) said in an alert: "Eruption and ash emission is continuing".

Bali is an important tourist centre and the global airport of Denpasar, the capital of the island, is operating normally for the moment, even if some airlines made a decision to cancel their flights. Virgin, KLM and Air Asia Malaysia also cancelled several flights Saturday.

The volcano in eastern Bali erupted three times Saturday, and is expected to continue doing so.

It told people within a 7.5km (4.7-mile) exclusion zone to "immediately evacuate" in an "orderly and calm manner".

Bali is a major tourist destination, although the main resorts of Kuta and Seminyak are about 70km from the volcano.

Emergency authorities have handed out eerie masks to local residents and tourists trapped on the island as fears grow about an imminent major eruption.

Under these circumstances, Garuda Indonesia enforces exemption policy for cancellation fee, rebooking/reroute fee, refund fee, administration fee and other ticket change fees for passengers who have scheduled flights to and from Lombok.

Indonesia sits on the "Pacific Ring of Fire" and has more than 120 active volcanoes.

Mount Agung was spewing smoke up to 1500 meters above its summit, two times higher than on Tuesday, when the smoke has forced the exodus of the people living near the mountain.
