Hackers Stole Personal Info Of 57 Million Uber Users, Company Says

Hackers Stole Personal Info Of 57 Million Uber Users, Company Says”

Car-hailing service provider Uber paid hackers US$100,000 (about HK$780,000) to hide a massive breach in 2016, which exposed the data of around 57 million customers and drivers.

Uber paid off hackers who obtained data on 57 million customers and drivers around the world.

In October 2016, Uber experienced a data security incident that resulted in a breach of information related to rider and driver accounts.

Forensic analysis confirmed that the names and driver's license numbers of around 600,000 United States drivers, as well as personal information about 57m users - including names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers - had been compromised.

And the cyber-thieves made off with 600,000 USA driver records that included their license numbers. He was not at the helm when it happened. Cybersecurity experts said Uber's payment to the two hackers in exchange for their discretion and assurances that they delete the data was very unusual.

Uber did not confirm details of the hack, but according to Bloomberg, two hackers accessed to a private area of Github, an online resource for developers, and found Uber's log-in credentials to Amazon Web Services, a B2B cloud computing service that stores data. Potential exposure under the NDB scheme is only likely to exacerbate the concerns, with significant penalties for Australian companies that fail to protect customers' PII or fail to quickly take appropriate steps after a breach. The New York attorney general has opened an investigation into the data breach, a spokeswoman said. And to Khosrowshahi's credit, he responded to knowledge of the security breach with the fury of someone who wants to make it clear that this kind of thing is unacceptable, and will not be tolerated. "We are changing the way we do business".

Khosrowshahi also said that he can't erase the past but the company will learn from its mistakes.

Khosrowshahi said on Tuesday he had hired Matt Olsen, former general counsel of the U.S. National Security Agency, to restructure the company's security teams and processes. "The incident did not breach our corporate systems or infrastructure", Khosrowshahi said.

Finally telling Uber users about the hack in a blog post yesterday, the company's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi gave a vague outline as to how the tech startup dealt with the hackers.

Uber's silence about its breach came while it was negotiating with the Federal Trade Commission about its handling of its riders' information.

Uber is notifying drivers whose licence numbers were swiped, and offering them credit and identity theft protections.
