Hariri holds talks with Sisi

Hariri holds talks with Sisi”

According to Lebanon's Almustaqbal newspaper, which cites the Lebanese prime minister's press service, Saad Hariri will meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi during his upcoming visit to Egypt.

Hariri, who arrived at his residence in Paris in the early hours of the morning, told Aoun in a phone call from Paris that he would be in Lebanon on Wednesday for the celebrations, the Lebanese president said on Twitter.

Hariri's mysterious decision to step down - which the president Michel Aoun has refused to accept while Hariri remains overseas - has raised fears over Lebanon's fragile democracy.

Minutes after Hariri landed in Cairo, small groups of supporters took to the streets of central Beirut in noisy convoys, honking, cheering and waving flags with the colours of the premier's Future Movement.

"As you know I have resigned and we will talk about this matter in Lebanon", Hariri said.

Fireworks were heard in Beirut as Hariri supporters in mainly Sunni areas celebrated his impending return. Lebanon's Christian president, Aoun, has refused to accept Hariri's resignation, accusing the Saudis of holding him against his will. Hariri denies this. El-Sissi returned home from Cyprus on Tuesday afternoon.

The crisis has thrust Lebanon into the regional rivalry pitting Saudi Arabia and its allies against a bloc led by Iran, which includes the heavily armed Lebanese Shi'ite Hezbollah group.

Hariri is still expected to return to Lebanon, more than two weeks after his shock resignation from Saudi Arabia.

Hariri, a Sunni Muslim, is a long-time ally of Saudi Arabia.
