Sessions Tells Congress Trump Campaign Was 'A Form of Chaos Every Day'

Sessions Tells Congress Trump Campaign Was 'A Form of Chaos Every Day'”

The attorney general previously recused himself from matters related to the 2016 presidential campaign. "But we do our duty every day based on the laws and fact".

The department's letter also referenced allegations that the FBI did not properly handle the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. The deal, which has always been a talking point for right-leaning media outlets, allowed a Russian nuclear agency to purchase Uranium One, a Canadian mining firm with deep ties to America's uranium extraction capacity. "I would say that's not fair, Mr. Jeffries". Papadopoulos, in pleading guilty to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, has admitted he told Trump and a group of other campaign officials, including Sessions, that he had contacts who could help arrange a meeting between Trump and Putin.

Gershman said that Sessions' failure to disclose the Papadopoulos meeting could amount to perjury.

Sessions repeatedly declined to answer questions related to the infamous dossier about Donald Trump prepared by retired British agent Christopher Steele, saying he would have to refer questions to the investigation by Mueller.

It was not the first time that Sessions, who was a senior Trump campaign aide and Republican senator, has revised his comments about contact between the campaign and Russian Federation.

Boyd wrote in the letter that "t$3 hese senior prosecutors will report directly to the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General [Rod Rosenstein], as appropriate, and will make recommendations as to whether any matters not now under investigation should be opened, whether any matters now under investigation require further resources, or whether any matters merit the appointment of a Special Counsel".

Sessions also said on Tuesday he did not challenge a statement by another campaign foreign policy adviser, Carter Page, that he told Sessions in a brief encounter that he was about to leave for Moscow.

And at his latest appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sessions seemed to shift his position again.

Sessions said he believed there were certain minority groups with the potential for violence. But in this case Franken asked a straightforward question and the response Sessions gave was misleading, Gershman said.

"I'm really not involved with the Justice Department, I'd like to let it run itself", Trump said.

Democratic Rep. Karen Bass pressed Sessions on the report during a Tuesday oversight hearing before the House Judiciary Committee. He added he hoped Sessions "can assure us that the Department is weathering near-daily attacks on its independent by President Trump - and that no office of the Department is being used to pressure the President's political enemies".
