McConnell Calls for Roy Moore to Drop Out of Senate Race”

Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore sexually assaulted a 16-year-old when he was an adult - locking her inside his auto and forcing her head onto his crotch, the now-grown woman claimed Monday.

Nelson says she was a 16-year-old high school student working at a restaurant where Moore was a regular.

She said he finally relented and, as she fell or was pushed out of the auto, warned her no one would believe her if she spoke about the encounter. The report was based on an interview with Leigh Corfman, who said she was 14 and Moore 32 when he initiated a sexual encounter.

"If true, the allegations leveled against Roy Moore are disturbing", U.S. Rep. I tried fighting him off, I yelled at him to stop, but instead of stopping, he began grasping my neck, attempting to force my head onto his crotch. "I think he did cocaine. I was scared. I felt that if I told anyone Mr. Moore would do something to me or my family", she said. "I was frightened by his position, by his power", Nelson said. I was twisting and struggling and begging him to stop.

"Are you saying that because there wouldn't have been a law, according to you, that that would have made it okay back then?" she asked.

"I believe the women", McConnell, R-Ky., said Monday in response to a question at an appearance in Louisville, Kentucky. It says Moore is innocent and "has never had any sexual misconduct with anyone".

National Republicans can't do anything to force Moore out of the race, however. Roy Moore's campaign sent out an email Monday titled "Mitch McConnell's plot to destroy me".

The crossfire escalated a GOP civil war over Moore's Senate candidacy in a December 12 special election, which until last week's allegations was viewed as an inevitable Republican win in the deep-red state.

Moore's contest against Democrat Doug Moore, a former federal prosecutor, is to fill out the last three years of the seat once held by Jeff Sessions, now attorney general in President Donald Trump's Cabinet.

A Democratic win in Alabama would be a blow to Trump's agenda and shift the political outlook for next year's midterm elections, giving Democrats a shot at gaining the three seats they need to recapture control of the U.S. Senate. "I sometimes wonder, how much does it take for people to believe women in these instances?" Moore and Jones face a December 12 special election to replace odd, who was appointed to replace Jeff Sessions when Sessions was named US attorney general.

Moore said allegations that he was involved with a minor child are "untrue" and said the newspaper "will be sued", drawing a round of applause.

But Moore has remained defiant.
