Strong 7.3 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Western Iran, Damages Villages”

Deputy Prime Minister Recep Akdağ said no destruction or damage occurred in Turkey from magnitude the quake.

On its website, the USGS placed the quake's epicenter at about 19 miles south-southwest of the Iraqi city of Halabja.

Turkey has become the first country to offer help upon the quake, a tweet from the autonomous Northern Iraq's Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) said.

Iraq's meteorology centre advised people to stay away from buildings and not to use elevators, in case of aftershocks.

"Without a doubt", he said, there would likely be serious damage and possible casualties.

Iran is prone to near daily quakes as it sits on many major fault lines. There was extensive structural damage to buildings and homes.

A Rudaw TV news anchor interviewed a guest in the Kurdish city of Sulaimani in northeastern Iraq when the studio was hit by the quake. Eight villages were damaged. "Electricity has been cut in some villages and rescue teams have been dispatched to those areas", the report said.

The semi-official Iranian ILNA news agency reported that at least 14 provinces had been impacted by the quake.

In Iran, the ISNA news agency said that the natural disaster was felt in several cities in the west of the country including Tabriz.
