Krishna river boat tragedy: Locals rushed to rescueā€¯

The boat that capsized at Krishna River in Ibrahimpatnam mandal, Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, was reportedly a private one.

The incident occurred when the boat set off for Pavitra Sangamam at Ferry village near Vijayawada from Bhavani Island, the police said.

"The boat carrying 30 passengers capsized in the river late this evening".

The National Disaster Relief Force has been pressed into rescue work, and a probe has been ordered into the incident, the officer added. Tourism Secretary Mukesh Kumar Meena said the boat belonged to a private company, River Boat Adventures, which had permission to operate only two small boats - a 2-seater and a 4-seater.

According to PTI, the police said that over 17 others are feared dead, but their bodies are yet to be recovered.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who is for Kerala visit, spoke with Krishna district Collector B Lakshmikantham and DGP N Samba Shiva Rao and directed them to rush to the spot and intensify operation. Preliminary investigation says boat turned upside down due to overload.

China Rajappa, who was supervising rescue operations at the accident spot, announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.
