Obama Reports to Jury Duty in Chicago, Not Called to Serveā€

Some include President, father and still my President.

Obama - wearing a dark sport coat, dress shirt, but without a tie - waved to people who gathered outside.

Former president Barack Obama has answered a jury summons, arriving at a Chicago courthouse to perform the civic duty asked of all Americans - but he was sent home just two hours later. With tons of photographers and fans around, Obama appeared bright and cheery given the circumstances.

Obama was seen shaking hands once he arrived in the building. He also helped brighten the normally vanilla experience by cracking a few jokes.

Obama is not the first former president to receive a notice for jury duty.

Like all prospective jurors, Obama earned US$17.20 ($24.70) for his day of service, which is actually pretty good considering he was only there two hours.

It is a mandatory requirement for U.S. citizens to attend for jury duty when they are summoned.

Obama is the highest-ranking former public official to be called to jury duty in Chicago. He did get called for jury duty in Cook Country once as president, in 2010, where he used the convenient excuse of running the country and writing this State of the Union address to get out of it. However people can be dismissed for jury due to economic hardship or if they work full time for the army, emergency services or the USA government. A decade later, Lawrence Tureaud, better known as Mr. T, showed up to a suburban Chicago courthouse for jury duty, sporting his usual Mohawk, but without the gold chains for which he is known. He was not selected to sit on a jury.
