Twitter Rolls Out 280 Character Limit in Canada and Worldwide”

Twitter is officially expanding its character count to 280 across the world, the company announced today, doubling the traditional 140-character count. Twitter said those Asian languages can convey about double the amount of information in one character compared with many other languages. Regardless, that's precisely what two German Twitter users did recently.

The announcement comes just a few months after Twitter started testing a 280-character limit for a set number of users around the globe, courting concern from users who were anxious that banishing brevity would clog up their timelines.

Only 5% of tweets posted since the experiment was introduced, for example, were longer than 140 characters and only 2% were over 190 characters; whether those statistics will hold up from now on remains to be seen.

Picked at random, it granted five percent of its users to 280 character tweets.

Say goodbye to 140 characters and the countdown that used to appear next to your working tweets, it's all about 280 characters and a slowly filling circle now. "But importantly, people Tweeted below 140 most of the time and the brevity of Twitter remained", the company wrote in a blog post Tuesday afternoon. However, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters were not given expanded character limits because it is easier to say something in a succinct space, Twitter said. The result is that users spend too much time trying to edit their tweets down, or abandon them altogether. It began testing an expanded 280 character limit in September, and now that feature is rolling out to everyone. People end up spending more time editing tweets or don't send them out at all.

The character change could also help spur user growth, an important issue for investors wanting Twitter to follow the trajectory of social media giants such as Facebook and Instagram. "We'll definitely see some of this novelty effect spike again with this week's launch and expect it to resume to normal behavior soon after".
