Apple wins $120 million from Samsung in slide-to-unlock patent battle

Apple wins $120 million from Samsung in slide-to-unlock patent battleā€

However, with the Supreme Court too, ruling against Samsung, the Korean smartphones giant has literally run out of options.

The Supreme Court has discarded Samsung's demand of court rulings that it impermissibly facsimiled features of Apple's iPhone The US Supreme Court on Monday repudiated to move back into the years-long dispute over patents between the world's apex smartphone creators, rejecting to take notice of Samsung's appeal of a lower court ruling, that re-established a jury award of about $120 million in favour of Apple. After the Supreme Court declined to hear the case - without comment - Samsung must pay Apple $120 million. That amount was reduced on appeal to $930 million and Samsung in December 2015 agreed to pay Apple $548 million for technology patents as part of a deal to settle the dispute. On the current iOS, people either use Touch ID, Face ID or double tap the Home button to bring up the password screen.

Samsung further added that Apple would unjustly profit from an invalid patent. The awards were overturned in February 2016 but 11 judges on the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C. reinstated them in October 2016. It is also worth noting that out of the three patents, the patent for "quick-links" feature, which turned phone numbers and addresses into clickable links, accounted for more than 80% of total damages, which is almost $100m.

In a statement, Samsung expressed about not being too satisfied with the decision: "Our argument was supported by many who believed that the Court should hear the case to reinstate open standards that promote innovation and prevent abuse of the patent system".

Apple had sought some $2.2 billion at trial, only to have a jury award the California-based company $119.6 million.

Although 120 million Dollars sounds pretty impressive, it is just a fraction of the total USD 2 billion demanded by Apple's lawyers from Samsung for the infringement.

The companies have battled in close to a dozen countries, with each accusing the other of infringing on various patents related to their flagship smartphone and tablet products.

Apple did not immediate respond to an AFP query on the decision.
