George HW Bush Openly Criticizes Trump in New Book”

Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush have never been close to or openly amicable with President Donald Trump.

According to the book, George HW Bush, who served as president from 1989 to 1993, has an instinctive dislike of Mr Trump.

"[During the election] I think he was concerned that Hillary Clinton would win", Updegrove said. I don't know much about him, but I know he's a blowhard. And if you talk to those around him, they have confidence in his leadership.

Bush Sr. famously skipped Trump's inauguration, citing a health reason and admitted that he voted for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a Democrat, in the 2016 presidential election.

Neither the 41st or 43rd presidents voted for Mr Trump in the election.

The elder Bush spent eight years in Ronald Reagan's administration as vice president and four years in the oval office as president, while the younger Bush was president for eight years.

The White House fired back at the Bushes' legacy and the second Bush administration's decision to invade Iraq in the early 2000s.

Trump stood for rudeness, global isolationism and weak leadership in the eyes of the Bushes, according to Updegrove - reservations echoed by many establishment Republicans.

Updegrove said the title of the book came from a conversation he had with the junior Bush in which he said, "I'm anxious that I will be the last Republican president".

George W Bush, however, said he simply left his presidential ballot blank.

"This guy doesn't know what it means to be president", he said.

"The American people voted to elect an outsider who is capable of implementing real, positive, and needed change - instead of a lifelong politician beholden to special interests".

"We should have never been in Iraq", Trump continued.

As the details of the book were made public, the White House obviously didn't stay quiet and reacted strongly to the comments.

George W Bush, adding to his remarks that Mr Trump "doesn't know what it means to be president", said "you can either exploit the anger, incite it, or you can come up with ideas to deal with it".

The book is the first authorized, joint biography of the two ex-presidents and comes with their cooperation and blessing.
