James Comey's 'coordination' testimony sheds new context on Clinton campaign's dossier funding

James Comey's 'coordination' testimony sheds new context on Clinton campaign's dossier funding”

"I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election and that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia's efforts".

President Trump on Sunday said the lack of investigation into the Clinton campaign spending a reported $12 million on a dossier crafted during the 2016 presidential race to smear him has sparked unprecedented "anger and unity" among fellow Republicans.

Trump's tweets followed a CNN report late Friday that a federal grand jury in Washington has approved the first charges in a criminal investigation into Russian Federation ties led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

CNN reported in January that senior United States intelligence officials briefed then-President Barack Obama and President-elect Trump about the dossier just weeks before Trump's inauguration.

'There is so much GUILT by Democrats/Clinton, and now the facts are pouring out.

"In that capacity, during the 2016 election cycle we retained Fusion GPS to provide research on multiple candidates in the Republican presidential primary, just as we retained other firms to assist in our research into Hillary Clinton", the statement reads.

And in an almost-Halloween-themed tweet, Trump claimed that the investigation only focused on collusion allegations between Trump and Russian Federation because Democrats were using "this awful (and bad for our country) Witch Hunt for evil politics".

Trump also tweeted Sunday about Clinton's involvement in what he called the "Uranium to Russian Federation deal", demanding that the matter receive greater scrutiny. Jeff Flake of Arizona, someone she considers to be her "best friend in the Senate", announced that he will not seek re-election in 2018, Collins said it's time to "accept that Donald Trump is our president".

On Sunday talk shows, Republicans rallied around Trump and questioned how CNN could have received information about secret grand jury proceedings.

Said J.D. Gordon, a former Pentagon spokesman and a Trump campaign national security adviser, "Considering what we've learned in recent days about the sources of Fusion GPS funding, I imagine that Hillary's campaign and the DNC will be investigated by the special counsel".

He added that if he "were to guess" who instigated the investigation, "I have one name in mind" - but declined to say who he was thinking of.

"These investigations were initiated on a partisan basis, and will shed no light on Russia's interference in the 2016 election, but then again they are not meant to do so", Representative Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said Tuesday in a statement.

Trump and a number of his allies have reveled in the revelation that Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee funded the opposition research known as the dossier, which includes a number of unsubstantiated anecdotes about Trump's behavior in Russian Federation.

The president was also reviving unproved allegations that Clinton was part of a quid pro quo in which the Clinton Foundation received donations in exchange for her support as secretary of state for a business deal that gave Russian Federation control over a large share of uranium production in the United States.

In her interview Sunday, Collins also said Perkins Coie attorney Marc Elias should be brought back to speak with the intelligence committee.

Revelations about the funding of the research into Trump's business, which the House committee was hoping to reveal via subpoena, answered one of the biggest mysteries of the 2016 presidential campaign.

The research effort expanded in March 2016 under financing from Democrats. The New York Times has not confirmed that charges have been approved.
