Turnbull confident in face of High Court loss

Turnbull confident in face of High Court loss”

"When that time comes, I will make sure I get off the horse with dignity and walk to the rail", he said.

The High Court decision, delivered on Friday afternoon, means Australia's coalition government no longer has a majority in the House of Representatives.

Mr Joyce offered his congratulations to Senators Matt Canavan and Nick Xenophon, whose citizenship doubts have now been cleared, and the latter of whom is voluntarily stepping down to seek election in South Australia's State Parliament.

Mr Joyce admitted the ruling did not come as a complete shock.

Tensions within the Coalition have flared since the High Court last week booted Mr Joyce and his Nationals' deputy Fiona Nash from parliament due to their dual citizenship. He is expected to win.

The opposition has received legal and parliamentary advice on a range of decisions which could be challenged after the High Court disqualified Mr Joyce and Ms Nash from parliament.

Asked whether he should have stepped down, Mr Joyce said he had strong advice that he would not be ruled ineligible.

Joyce gave the Coalition government its one seat majority in the house.

"I think it's unlikely the High Court would strike down decisions before these issues arose", the University of NSW Dean of Law told the ABC this morning.

"I was always prepared for this outcome, I don't actually stand here totally surprised", he said.

"I just think that people should be reminded of that and if they really have a strong view of something, put your name to it".

The saga began for Mr. Joyce in July after media inquiries to his office made him aware he might hold dual citizenship through his father, James Joyce.

The deputy prime minister is the main casualty, after being found to have held dual citizenship when he ran for election.
