Balzer: Texans players react to owner's comment”

10 players, including Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, briefly left the practice facility on Friday, according to sources cited by ESPN. It turns out, as many initially speculated, the wideout skipped practice to show his displeasure at Texans owner Bob McNair.

But a Texans players meeting last night reportedly ended with a decision to stage a major protest during today's national anthem.

The money-minting days of the NFL are clearly in jeopardy from ownership's standpoint, and players point to a perceived lack of enthusiasm by the NFL at fostering their passion for increased social awareness and activism against injustices, pointing to breast cancer and other social causes that have received league support. "If something changes, I'm sure we'll let you know".

Among those who heard McNair's remark during the Fall League Meeting was Troy Vincent, NFL executive vice president of football operations, a league source told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

McNair, in response to Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder generalizing in regard to the majority of the fans preferring for players to stand versus kneel, McNair responded "we can't have the inmates running the prison". "I never meant to offend anyone and I was not referring to our players".

McNair apologized for his comments, but the damage was already done - and members of the Texans were not happy, with some even desiring a walk out during Friday's practice. I used a figure of speech that was never meant to be taken literally. "I wouldn't say the higher-ups in the league feel the way that Bob does because I don't think our owner does, and I think there are very progressive owners in this league who don't feel that way". He said there will also be a pregame demonstration by the team before Sunday's game. But as far as myself, I don't (have a thought on that). Like I said, people saying how they really feel. "I think it was embarrassing. We put our bodies and minds on the line every time we step on that field, and to use an analogy of inmates in prison, that's disrespectful".
