Stanford Study Confirms Cannabis Users Have More Sex

Stanford Study Confirms Cannabis Users Have More Sex”

One question the researchers considered is whether people who use marijuana tend to be more outgoing in general and are therefore the type of people who also have sex more frequently.

Regular marijuana users have about 20 percent more sex than abstainers, according to a new study from researchers at Stanford University. The study focused on heterosexual sex, and it didn't explain why there might be a connection between sex and marijuana. "It doesn't say if you smoke more marijuana, you'll have more sex", Eisenberg said. It asked more than 28,000 women and almost 23,000 men how often they had sex in the four weeks prior to the survey and how frequently they used marijuana in the past year.

They found women who smoked pot daily had sex 7.1 times a month on average, while men who got high every day got busy 6.9 times a month.

For men, those who reported no marijuana use had sex on average 5.6 times during the previous four weeks, whereas for daily users that number increased to 6.9.

The US National Institute of Drug Abuse estimates that over 20 million adult Americans use marijuana.

For pot in particular we're just now starting to understand some of the potential benefits of the drug, including euphoria and relaxation, pain relief, lower rates of opiate dependence and domestic violence, decreased use of more harmful drugs, and, apparently, better sexual health. "If anything, it's associated with increased coital frequency", said senior study author Michael Eisenberg, assistant professor of urology, according to the university press release. Overall, pot smokers had 20 percent more sex than non-smokers. In addition, coital frequency rose steadily with increasing marijuana use, a dose-dependent relationship supporting a possible active role for marijuana in fostering sexual activity.

After excluding respondents who didn't answer one or more of the relevant questions, the researcher was left with data for 28,176 women, averaging 29.9 years of age, and 22,943 men, averaging 29.5 years of age.

Some 24.5 percent of men and 14.5 percent of women in the analysis reported having used marijuana, and there was a positive association between the frequency of marijuana use and the frequency of sexual intercourse.

Eisenberg told CNN that the results he found surprised him: Both sets of people who smoked marijuana had sex more often than those who didn't. On the other hand, some studies suggest that marijuana stimulates regions of the brain which are involved in sexual arousal and activity.

Furthermore, the link could still be seen even after accounting for the participant's use of other drugs.

The study was published October 27 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Palamar authored a small study comparing the sexual experience of people who are under the influence of alcohol versus marijuana.
