Pakistan is committed to eradicate terrorism from the country, PM tells Tillerson

Pakistan is committed to eradicate terrorism from the country, PM tells Tillerson”

President Donald Trump has vowed to get tough with Pakistan unless it changed its behaviour, with US officials threatening further reductions in aid and mooting targeted sanctions against Pakistani officials.

"We are committed in the war against terror. And we are looking forward to moving ahead with the U.S. and building a tremendous relationship", Abbasi replied, according to a pool report.

US Secretary of the State said that Pakistan is an important country in the region.

"The secretary says he's also pushing Pakistan to deny safe haven to the Taliban and other terrorist groups", NPR's Michele Kelemen, who's traveling with Tillerson, tells our Newscast unit.

In August, President Donald Trump unveiled his policy for Afghanistan and South Asia.

United States and Pakistani sources say Tillerson's visit to Islamabad will be followed later in the year by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis as Trump seeks to send a tough message to the wayward Cold War ally.

The relations between Pakistan and the United States have witnessed marked improvement over the past few weeks following a series of recent interactions, including Prime Minister Abbasi and VP Pence's meeting in NY on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in NY.

After stopping back in Doha, Tillerson also made an unannounced visit to Iraq on Monday.

The US-Pakistan relationship has waxed and waned dramatically since Trump took office in January.

"The perception here is whatever they do, it is not going to please the Americans", Hussain told AFP.

Following the secretary of state's surprise meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani-which was only reported after the fact-the US Embassy released a photo of the two men seated together in a room with large TV screens, a clock, and a fire alarm visible behind them, giving the location as the capital of Kabul.

"There are, we believe, moderate voices among the Taliban, voices that do not want to continue to fight forever, they don't want their children to fight forever", said Tillerson.

While both photos showed the two men sitting in a windowless room, the image released by Afghanistan has removed the military-style digital clock and fire alarm above the two men-both of which are pictured in the USA copy.
